Are you tired? Do you feel weak or weary? It’s time to take a break from your never ending to-do list and rest. I can hear you now, “I can’t take a break! Somebody’s got to do all this!” I hear you, but you know deep down if you work yourself to exhaustion, you’re not going to be much help to anyone. Even if you can only take 5 minutes, find a quiet place and put your attention completely on the Lord. Think about His promises from Scripture. If you can’t think of any off the top of your head, start with Isaiah 40.

“Red Bull’s not the only thing that’ll give you wings. If you’re feeling a little bit worn down and you feel like you need a boost, you might want to meditate on Isaiah 40.31. It says that if you trust in the Lord you’ll find new strength, you’ll soar high on wings like eagles, you’ll run and not grow weary, and you’ll walk and not faint.”
~CJ McKay

“Do you not know? Have you not heard? The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He will not grow tired or weary, and his understanding no one can fathom. He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak. Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall; but those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.”

Isaiah 40.28-31 NIV

You’ve probably heard it said before, but it’s so easy to let busyness or work get the best of you because it’s encouraged and admired to be a hard worker. Having a lot to do makes us feel important, needed, and purposeful. And while it’s crucial to do what God has given us to do, and some things just can’t be avoided, are there more things on your schedule than you can realistically handle? God doesn’t mean for you to be worn out, over-stressed, and depleted. What can you lay down today?

Another great Scripture to meditate on is:

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”

Matthew 11.28-30

Have you read this passage in the Message version? This is one I come back to often when I’m feeling overwhelmed or the pressure to sacrifice my well-being or mental health to get more done. Read this, and breathe (and feel your blood pressure go down!)

“Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion? Come to me. Get away with me and you’ll recover your life. I’ll show you how to take a real rest. Walk with me and work with me—watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I won’t lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you. Keep company with me and you’ll learn to live freely and lightly.”

Matthew 11.28-30 MSG

See what I mean? Take some time everyday to rest, to meditate on the Word of God, and in prayer, asking God what your schedule should look like. What is there in your life that only you can do?
