They’re just ordinary.

Nothing is wrong, but there is nothing special either. But sometimes it is fun or comforting to add a little “specialness” to your day. And often small, simple things can improve your day in a noticeable way.

Open the windows

Even for a little while. Fresh air changes the feel of a room more than you expect. It makes everything feel less closed in.

Pray

Truly pray. Try more than a simple “Thank you, God,” although that is good, but sitting down and pouring out your heart – everything – your fears, your sins, your pain – and giving it to Him, trusting Him who loves you more than anyone, will completely change your day. You may cry, but it will reduce your stress and bring you peace.

Get one thing done that has been sitting in your head

Not everything – just one thing. Send the email. Make the call. Finish the small task you have been putting off. It clears mental space and makes you feel so much better.

Read a book

Not your phone. Not scrolling. Just a few pages of something you actually want to read. It’s a different kind of rest.

Make something you actually want to eat

A simple meal. A dessert. Something you’d enjoy – not just what is easiest or fastest. If you are worried about making something you don’t want to eat a lot of, make a smaller portion or share the leftovers. Even a small portion feels different when you chose it on purpose.

Dance and Sing

Put HOPE 100.7 on while you are making dinner or doing a chore and sing along – out loud. Singing out loud literally improves both your health and your happiness.

Write a short note to someone

Nothing long or formal. Just a quick message to thank someone or tell them you appreciate them. It doesn’t take much time, but it tends to lift your mood as much as theirs.

Light a candle during dinner

It’s a small thing, but it changes the feel of the evening. It makes an ordinary meal feel special without any extra effort.

Clean one thing

Not the whole house. Just one spot or area.

The counter, the sink, a small pile that’s been sitting there. One clear space can make the whole room feel easier to be in.

Step outside

Even briefly. A few minutes of fresh air or sunlight can reset your mood more than staying inside all day. And if you can’t get out for a quick stroll during the day, go out and look up at the night sky. It’s an excellent reminder of who is in control and might let you fall asleep a little easier.

You don’t have to do all of these, of course. And you don’t have to turn them into a routine.

Some will come and go. Some might stick without you really trying. And some might be things you save for days that need a little extra help. But they’re there – small, simple ways to make an ordinary day feel a little better.

Within our personal lives winter seems so long and so unnecessary. Here are a few reflections I’ve heard from friends and family:

“I think the winter has completely drained, kicked butt, pulled hair out, made you scream, and run down the street. It has been awful, cold, dreary, I mean, just everything. And so I am so looking forward to even just seeing a little bitty bit of the warmer temperatures. It reminds me there’s hope, and I’m looking forward to spring, like really for real.”

“This winter was very draining, very exhausting. The days are getting longer. I watched the news and the newscaster said, ‘We’re going to have another hour and 10 minutes of sunlight.’ I can tell the sun is shining more and that it’s coming. OK, we’ve turned the corner.”

“I feel the warmth of the sun and hear the early morning songs of the birds a bit more. That’s a sign of hope, that spring is on its way. I really enjoy spending quiet time on my porch, drinking coffee, and enjoying the quietness and ability to watch the little squirrels run around.”

God has created the seasons and each has its significance. Winter may seem the least beneficial, but it’s not. Here are 10 Benefits of Winter.

Why Winter Feels So Long

If winter feels especially long right now, you’re not alone. People, especially women, often feel this in response to reduced daylight, colder temperatures, and the “sameness” the season often brings. While we cannot shorten winter, there are simple ways we can make winter feel shorter and more livable. Not big transformations – just small, steady practices that bring warmth, light, and a sense of movement into everyday life.

Mark Time in Small, Visible Ways

One reason winter feels so heavy is that the weeks blur together. Instead of waiting for spring, try giving yourself small markers throughout the week. A simple Friday soup night, a Sunday afternoon walk, or a midweek coffee ritual can break up the monotony. These small rhythms give you something to look forward to and help the days feel more distinct.

This is one of the simplest ways of coping with winter fatigue: Create gentle structure without pressure.

Add Light Whenever You Can

Light plays a bigger role in winter mood than we often realize. If possible, open the curtains first thing in the morning and spend a few minutes near a window or step outside, even if it is cloudy. The instinct to withdraw in winter is understandable, but isolation tends to make the season feel longer and heavier. Staying connected doesn’t require hosting or planning. A short walk with a friend, a phone call, or an invitation for coffee can make a real difference. If your church has them, make the effort to get to a home group or Bible study. The warmth of fellowship can do wonders.

We know it is coming, but somehow Christmas seems to always sneak up on us. School activities, Thanksgiving, and life keep us busy until we realize we haven’t even started getting ready. If you are a Christian, you know that we don’t need trees, gifts, or lists to celebrate the reminder of God coming to live with us, but most of us enjoy family and friends coming together and the joy of giving even something small to a child or a friend.

So before the calendar fills and the to-do lists double, here are a few ways to prepare your heart and home for a calmer, Christ-centered Christmas.

1. Start with Your Heart

Before you make a single list or shop for a single gift, take time for early Christmas preparation – starting with your heart.

• Choose a devotional or Scripture reading to guide you through the coming weeks.
• Set aside time each week to pray about what you want this Christmas to be about.
• Ask God to show you who might need encouragement, company, or care this year.

When we begin with worship, everything else we do – decorating, giving, celebrating – become an offering instead of an obligation.

2. Simplify Your Space

A peaceful heart often starts with a peaceful home.

One of the best Christmas planning tips is to declutter before the holidays begin. Donate or get rid of unused items. It may not be a good time to tear into some huge cleaning project but at least make room for what matters to you. If you are hosting, inventory your supplies in case you need to find something or order what you were missing last time!

One helpful idea is to start a holiday box or at least one specific spot to place cards, wrapping paper, or small gifts that you pick up early. I found this to be almost essential to avoid misplacing or forgetting what you have already bought.

Remember, you do not have to decorate every corner or say yes to every event. A few meaningful touches can say “Christmas” just as beautifully as a house full of glitter.

3. Plan to Give Intentionally

Christmas giving can either be joyful or stressful – and it often depends on how we plan.

If you start setting aside a little each week, you will have more freedom to give generously later – without the last-minute financial crunch. Maybe it’s a missionary your church supports or a single mom who could use a grocery card.

And don’t forget the power of simple gifts: a handwritten note, homemade cookies, or a heartfelt visit can mean far more than something wrapped in shiny paper.

4. Make a Manageable Plan

Create a holiday organization checklist or just write out a simple timeline for when you want to start work on your tasks. It doesn’t have to be complicated – just a few small steps for each month. You could include things like:

• Make a gift list and budget
• Declutter and inventory supplies
• Finish most shopping
• Plan menus
• Decorate
• Bake
• Deliver gifts and donations

Northern Ohio might turn a bit earlier, but here in our corner, mid-month will be the sweet spot. Some trees have started showing hints already thanks to some recent cool nights in September, so it is worth keeping your eye out as you plan.

Perhaps the color you see on your way to work and back each day is all you need, but if you are looking to get a little closer to the beauty of fall, here are some local favorites. Grab a hoodie, pack a thermos of cider, and head out for a hike or even a ride.

Brukner Nature Center (Troy)

Tucked into the rolling hills near Troy, Brukner’s six miles of trails wander through woods and meadows bursting with color. The Overlook Trail gives you a peaceful view above the Stillwater River valley. If you have time, the Interpretive Building has a mix of wildlife displays and nature exhibits if you want to warm up after your hike.

Climb the steps to the top of this ancient earthwork, and you will be rewarded with a panoramic view of the valley – rolling hills, treetops, and the Great Miami River all glowing in autumn shades. It is a short climb with a big payoff.

If you would rather experience fall color on the move, hop on your bike (or just walk a section) of the Great Miami Riverway. The paved trail stretches for miles through forests and riverside parks, connecting towns like Troy, Miamisburg, and Dayton. It’s one of the best ways to see a lot of color in one day.

Dear brothers, is your life full of difficulties and temptations? Then be happy. For when the way is rough, your patience has a chance to grow. So let it grow, and don’t try to squirm out of your problems. For when your patience is finally in full bloom, then you will be ready for anything, strong in character, full and complete.

However, during my last cross-country, multi-stops airline trip, I gained a new perspective.

As I stood at the ticket service counter getting rebooked for the final leg of my journey that I missed because of the multiple delays…I said to the agent, “Maybe I wasn’t supposed to be in the air at this time to my final destination.” I was quickly convicted in my spirit that I didn’t want anything bad to happen to the people on the flight I missed.

I checked later and found that the flight landed without incident. This opportunity, this out of the way rerouting, this accident provided me with a contemplation that “everything isn’t about me.”

What if God was redirecting my steps for His assignment?

I’ve long clung to Deuteronomy 11:24: Every place on which the sole of your foot treads shall be yours. I’ve prayed that scripture when starting a new job, when praying for territories in which I used to live, and general prayer walking around my neighborhood.

I may never know the exact mission for which God directed me on this night due to the change of my destination and time. I have reminisced over every encounter of that night into the next day with a God wonderment…”Was that the reason for the delay and rearrangement of my expected schedule?” Allow me to share a few of those moments that I believe could have been the “God Wink” for my feet to be walking in places that were not of my choosing.

• The conversation with the ticket agent and my aha awareness of compassion and concern for those who did make the flight and that no harm would come to them
• The additional tip money received by the evening and morning hotel/airport shuttle drivers
• The protection of the city in which I slept (I was reminded of Abraham’s effort to spare Sodom and Gomorrah if a specific number of righteous could be found in the city)
• Kind words and smiles to everyone I met
• To learn the lesson of which I’m now writing that may never have impacted me to the core of my being as it has because of this delay

As I’m now on the rebooked flight, I still wonder why I’m on this flight versus the one last night. But my thoughts are less on me and my safety, and more on “To whom God do you want me to be a blessing and a TRUE representative of Your Gospel of PEACE, LOVE, and JOY?”

Allow your interruptions to be viewed as opportunities to be the LIGHT of Jesus in a dark world that desperately needs Him as the resolution and restoration to Godly sanity. Relax and don’t take yourself, or this world so seriously. God has given us reason in His word to trust Him.

Be still and know (recognize, understand) that I am God. I will be exalted among the nations! I will be exalted in the earth.

So, what does rest really mean when life does not slow down?

The Rest We Want vs. the Rest We Really Need

When we think of rest, we think of escape – a nap, a weekend away, or just a break from everything. But biblical rest, that kind that really refreshes, is deeper than that. It’s not just physical, it’s spiritual. It isn’t found in a place, but in a Person.

Come to Me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.

Matthew 11:28

When Jesus said that, He was speaking to working-class Jews in the first century; they certainly were not taking vacations the way we think of them. He saw their weariness, the endless needs, and the long to-do-lists. They, too, were working long hours, caring for parents and for children – and without modern conveniences. But He offered rest, not just for the body but also for the soul.

Misunderstood Rest

Many of us think we are resting when we are really avoiding. We scroll social media and binge watch TV late at night. We avoid conversations or decisions that seem too much to deal with. But this kind of “rest” does not restore us – it just drains us more. Real rest is found when we go to Jesus. When we give Him our cares, our stress, and our insecurities. He promises to hear us, and when we trust Him and obey His Word, He will give us comfort and peace.

In vain you rise early and stay up late, toiling for food to eat – for He grants sleep to those He loves.

Psalm 127:2

Those who seek help and guidance from God receive His blessings – even sleep.

While Jesus was on earth, He faced pressure all the time. People wanted healed, to ask Him questions, to attack Him – and even to kill Him. The Bible tells us several times that He went away by Himself or with just His close disciples to rest. But almost all of those instances mention that He prayed. Even Jesus found rest in talking to God. How much more do we need to follow His example?

And when we do rest, whether spiritually or physically, it is not wrong. It does not make us lazy. It is not a waste of time. From Creation, God built rest into our lives. God worked for six days and then rested on the seventh. He wasn’t tired – He was showing us a rhythm for living.

So, if you feel life just never gives you a break, if you are weary and tired, do not try to revive yourself with things that last mere seconds. Instead, make sure you are talking to the God who can take away your fear. Who can renew your strength. Who can carry you when you cannot walk yourself and who takes your heavy burdens and replaces them with rest.

But maybe you are on the other side and are thinking about having a yard sale of your own. You could use spending money for your family trip, some extra money to pay off bills, or you just want to clear out clutter – but if you have never put on a sale, it might sound pretty intimidating. A well-run garage sale can be rewarding if you do it right. From pricing strategy, to presentation, to advertising, here are some tips to help you get the most out of your sale:

Pick the right time.

Late spring and early summer are peak sale seasons, and Friday and Saturday mornings will bring in the most traffic. Does your community host a community-wide sale? If so, they usually will do most of the advertising for you.

Advertise, advertise, advertise.

You can advertise in a local newspaper – some people still look there – but at least two days ahead of time, put an ad in any local Facebook Buy, Sell, Trade or Marketplace kind of groups, garage sale or neighborhood groups (like Nextdoor) you may have in your area. Use keywords like baby clothes, tools, or furniture if they are applicable to your sale.

Make lots of easy-to-read signs with clear address, dates, and arrows. Place your signs in high traffic areas and at helpful locations along the way to your sale – and use those arrows! People will not come to your sale if they cannot find it.

Prep for your sale. Start early.

You do not want to be up all night before your sale looking for and pricing your items. If you have some higher dollar items, consider listing them online (like on Marketplace) ahead of time. It gives people a little more time to consider and purchase them. You may want to price them a little higher than what you want because you most likely will be asked to lower your price.

Take an hour each weekend for a few weeks to go through your house and garage to gather what you no longer need or want. The more stuff you are able to put out, the more likely people are to stop at your sale. And do not forget to get change from the bank if you need to and have a calculator handy.

Presentation and organization matter.

Hang as many clothes as you can. Sort folded clothes by gender and size, and make sure they are clean and presentable. Most shoppers will not take the time to look if there is not some kind of organization. Put your large items out near the street so people know you have more than clothes and organize the rest by category (books, kitchen, toys, etc.). As much as possible, keep items off the ground. Keep electronics near an outlet so people can check to see that they work.

Make clear signs for pricing.

Price as many individual items as you are able; most people do not like to have to ask how much things cost. Make your prices fair and match them to your area. You will not sell much if your prices are too high for your shoppers. A good guideline is 10% of retail for most things and you can go up to 50% for new items. If you are doing a half-price day or some kind of discount, try to advertise that on your signs and ads.

Sell treats or goodies.

Shoppers appreciate a snack, and if you have kids, they can help out by being in charge of this.

Some final tips – if you aren’t sure, check on any kind of regulations for your location. Some cities do require a permit. Open early and be friendly and helpful. A positive attitude will not only encourage more sales but will make your day better as well!

But you might have a bunch of questions. Understandably. While our great-grandmas might have always had chickens running around, for those of us not living on a farm, it is kind of a newer idea. To help you figure out if raising chickens in your yard is right for you, let’s look at the benefits of having chickens and then ask some questions and get answers from women already raising chickens themselves.

Benefits of Backyard Chickens

Having chickens can be a lot of fun and helpful in surprising ways. The obvious one is their eggs, a daily supply of safe protein. Gathering warm, fresh eggs right from the nest is not just nostalgic – eggs from your own chickens often taste much better than ones you buy in the store. The yolks are bright yellow and have a firmer white part. Plus, you know what your chickens are eating, so you can feel good about what you are eating too.

They also help with weeds. When chickens walk around and scratch the ground, they can dig up small weeds and their seeds. This can help keep your garden tidier. And chicken droppings are good for your plants. When you mix it into your garden the right way, it is a powerful, organic fertilizer that will effectively work without you needing to buy the store-bought products. If you do have a garden, chickens can even help get it ready. They like to scratch and dig, which helps mix up the soil, and at the end of the season, they can help clean up old plants.

Chickens also are good at eating leftover food and your kitchen scraps. Vegetable and fruit scraps and peels, greens, and old bread can all be a tasty treat for your chickens.

You might be surprised, but chickens are fun to watch. They have their own funny ways of doing things, and both kids and grown-ups can learn a lot by watching and caring for them. They have a pecking order, dust bathing rituals, and display great pride after laying an egg. Taking care of chickens teaches where food comes from and how to responsibly care for animals. It can also help you feel just a little more self-sufficient.

What Do I Need to Know to Start Raising Backyard Chickens?

Raising chickens is a commitment, and there are many things to consider before bringing home the adorable little peeps. How do I start, what do chickens eat, how can I keep them safe, am I even allowed to do this where I live? So, I asked two backyard chicken farmers some of the questions you should ask before getting started. Heather and Heidi both raise chickens and address some of the questions you might have:

1. Where did you get your chicks or hens? You can get your chicks in a variety of ways – farm stores, such as Tractor Supply or Farm & Feed, other chicken growers, or the classified ads.

2. What breed(s) did you start with and why? One breed Heather and Heidi both started with was Barred Rock because of their hardiness for the weather and egg production. Others mentioned were Black Australorps, Golden Sex Links, and Golden Marans.

3. How many chickens would you suggest for a beginner? Your space will dictate the number you can start with. Heid started with 12, but feed cost is another factor to consider before you commit to a large number. You can start with as few as 2 or 4 and work your way up!

5. What would you say is the must-have supply for beginners? Safe-from-predator housing and fencing, quality water container and feeders, and at least some shade.

6. How much time do you spend each day/week on chicken care? Both report that hens are easy to care for and take about 10-15 minutes per day and when needed, about 30 minutes to clean the coop and replace the bedding.

8. How do you keep your chickens safe from predators? They use solar lights, chicken wire, and netting overhead.

9. Do your chickens free range, or do you keep them in a run? Both keep them in the run for most of the day and then let them out for a few hours. The hens like to eat bugs, but they don’t want them to become a nuisance to their neighbors.

11. Does egg production slow down at certain times of the year? Usually it slows in the winter, but some years, it doesn’t seem to.

12. What do you do with extra eggs – share, sell, preserve? In the past they have sold them for $3-5 a dozen, but now, they both typically share them with friends and family. Heidi also preserves eggs.

13. Have you saved money, or is it more about the lifestyle and experience? Because prices have recently gone up, they say they have not really saved money. They do it because they prefer fresh eggs, knowing where their food comes from, and they just enjoy the hobby.

15. About how much did you spend getting started? This is going to vary a lot depending on how many hens you start with. Heidi, who started with 12 hens, went through a process (during which time they kept their peeps in the basement!) of trying different waterers and feeders, doors and fencing, and spent approximately $250-300. Heather also bought heat lamps and bulbs and an incubator for eggs, so she spent about $500.

16. What are your ongoing costs – feed, bedding, supplies, vet care? For a month, a 40-pound bag of feed costs about $18 and if you use wood shavings or some sort of purchased bedding, it will cost $20-30. A deep layer of wood shavings though can last up to 12 months! Neither uses vet care but cares for their hens on their own or turns to a community group or a seasoned farmer for advice.

17. What’s your favorite part about raising chickens? They mentioned fresh eggs, the free bug and pest control, and that they are fun to watch. They both just enjoy it!

18. Have you had any funny or surprising experiences with them? They do attract predators, such as hawks, so it is important to keep your hens safe. Heather has taken her hens to the county fair and won blue ribbons. Heidi enjoys letting others experience holding or being around chickens. She has watched hens jumping to try to reach blackberries on higher branches and has taken them on the swing with her. She makes videos of her fun chicken experiences and posts them on TikTok.

19. What is something you wish someone had told you before you started? Heidi wishes someone had told her to get an automatic chicken door so that you do not have to be there to open and close it every day. Heather did not know how attached you can get to your chickens. They let her hold them and pet them and will even eat treats out of her hand.

20. Did you have to follow any city ordinances or zoning laws? Because of where both Heidi and Heather live (in a township or in a place already zoned for agriculture), they have never had to get a permit or follow any laws, but you do need to check your own local regulations. Some municipalities may require a permit, some may have a limit on the number of hens, some may have a restriction on where the hens can be placed. Each town or city has different rules, so check first.

21. How did your neighbors react? Any tips for keeping peace in the neighborhood? Most neighbors have enjoyed the hens and laughed at their funny characteristics. If they do go where they aren’t supposed to and dig a few holes or eat a neighbor’s birdseed, apologize and offer some free eggs. Just try to be considerate and keep your hens in your space as much as possible.

22. Should I get chickens? You do have to take care of chickens every day. They need a safe place to live, food, and water, and it is important to check your local regulations. But for many people, the good things about having backyard chickens make it all worth it. So if you are looking for a new hobby that is both useful and enjoyable, maybe think about getting some hens for your backyard. They can bring joy and a little bit of the country life to suburban and urban backyards alike. Chickens might be your new favorite thing!

Well, maybe not this year. $5 for a dozen eggs might make us rethink or at least rework our traditions. So we came up with a list of activities you and your kids or grandkids can do using affordable and reusable plastic eggs. You can find them almost anywhere, and they’re perfect for a variety of activities that go beyond the traditional egg hunt.

One of my favorites is to make your own resurrection eggs. You can buy these commercially, already made, but it isn’t very hard to make your own. Put an object relating to the Easter story in each egg (ex. a stone, a nail, a tiny cross, a silver-colored coin, etc.). You can find ideas on the internet and even little cards to print out. Each day, leading up to Easter, you can hide one of the eggs, then talk about what role each of the objects played in the death and resurrection of Jesus, or you can talk about them all at one time and read the Bible passage with your kids. This is a great hands-on activity that allows children to “see” parts of the story.

Another idea is a scavenger hunt with eggs. Hide eggs with written clues leading to the next egg, ending with a basket or prize. You can do this inside or outside.

One variation on hiding eggs is to make the eggs glow-in-the-dark for a fun nighttime hunt. Put a small glowstick or an LED tea light in the egg for a totally different egg hunt experience.

The last activity we have is a great one to not only teach your kids about God’s love, but also to share it. That is to egg your neighbors – in a good way! You will probably need larger plastic eggs for this so you can fill them with small treats and notes encouraging them in Jesus’s love. Perhaps your church has promotional materials for an Easter service or tracts that tell the good news of Easter for those who may not know. Secretly leave them on your neighbors’ doorsteps with a note saying, “You’ve been egged – with love and blessings from our family!”

Of course, Easter is so much more than determining what kind of eggs to use. The reason we use a symbol of new life is that we are celebrating the resurrection of Jesus Christ enabling us to have new life as well. So prioritize teaching the children in your life the reason why we celebrate, but if that is all you can handle, there are several local egg hunt events you can take part in:

Many Irish symbols and St. Patrick, especially, have been linked with luck over the years. While we may not scour our lawns for four-leaf-clovers or follow a rainbow looking for a pot of gold, we do use the language. We wish each other luck, wear our lucky hat, and feel lucky to be alive. As Christians, we do not put our hope in luck or chance; we trust that God is sovereign, in control. But why? Why is faith better than luck?

Luck is random, but God is intentional.

The world says that life is unpredictable and that luck is about being in the right place at the right time. But God has a purpose for us (Colossians 1:16), plans to help us and work for our good (Jeremiah 29:11 and Romans 8:28), and in Proverbs 16, we are told that God ultimately directs our steps.

Luck is temporary, but God’s blessings last forever.

We say this all the time. We catch a lucky break, or we are out of luck. It changes; it comes and goes, and we have no control over it. But God’s favor is for a lifetime (Psalm 30:5), and His love will last forever (Psalm 136:2). Whatever is good and perfect is a gift coming down to us from God our Father . . . He never changes (James 1:17).

Luck relies on chance, but faith trusts God’s promises.

Luck is not predictable. It’s random. Sometimes it’s good, and sometimes it’s bad. But God never changes (Malachi 3:6), and He cannot lie (Titus 1:2). So if He promises something, its fulfillment is not random or unpredictable. It will happen. The Bible says that God works good for those who love Him. We don’t need a lucky charm; we have God’s Word. Why rely on chance? Trust in God, knowing He loves us and has promised to provide.

Luck says, “Cross your fingers”, but God’s Word says to pray.

When we want something good, if we are depending on luck, the most we can do is cross our fingers or knock on wood. There is no way to get the attention of “the gods” or fate or whatever to ask them to give us what we need. But God, over and over, tells us to call out to Him and He will hear us and answer us. Philippians 4:6 tells us, Don’t worry about anything, but pray about everything. With thankful hearts offer up your prayers and requests to God. Don’t just hope for good fortune, ask and trust God to give you all you need.

Remember, our faith isn’t in luck, it is in God. Even when we do not understand His timing, we know we can trust Him to provide. Instead of chasing lucky breaks or looking for lucky charms, know God’s Word, pray with confidence, and trust His perfect plan.

The same article states that when people want to treat themselves, about 90% will choose chocolate to do so. Candy sales increase around holidays including Valentine’s Day, Easter, and Halloween.

The History of Chocolate

The history of cocoa beans and chocolate dates back thousands of years with origins in Mesoamerica. Before the1800s, chocolate was mostly consumed as a bitter drink among the cultures of Olmecs, Mayans, and Aztecs. Cocoa beans were so valued they were used as currency. Cocoa was also used as a religious drink, medicinal elixir, and an elite beverage.

Cocoa was exported from Mesoamerica to Spain by Hernán Cortés in the 1500s and eventually from there to France, Italy, and England by the 1600s.

By the 1800s, Daniel Peter and Henri Nestlé developed milk chocolate by adding condensed milk to cocoa. Large chocolatiers in the United Kingdom, Switzerland, and the United States worked at making chocolate affordable to the common people.

In the early 1900s the candy bar became an easy distribution format. Other candies that quickly followed the introduction of the Hershey’s Milk Chocolate Bar were Snickers (1930), Kit Kat (1935), and M&M’s (1941). Post WWII saw an increase in new candy bars because of mass advertising and mass production.

Chocolate has been taken to the next level by the development of luxury and gourmet brands such as Lindt, Godiva, and Ghirardelli. Many chocolate brands have increased the offer of limited-edition (seasonal) chocolates around holidays and special occasions.

Concerns About Too Much Chocolate

I’m very thankful to say, I’ve become more controlled in my chocolate “addiction.” I have lost the mouth watering reaction to chocolate when I walk into a store. I’m sure I’m not alone feeling bombarded by the ease of purchase and mass advertisement that causes us to hear chocolate calling our name. The sugar and fat in sweet chocolate stimulates the brain cells contributing to addiction and craving of chocolate. So often, chocolate is used as a comfort food recouping childhood memories and is used in an effort to soothe our negative emotions. However, there are benefits to consuming chocolate.

Benefits Found in Dark Chocolate

• Rich in Antioxidants: flavonoids and polyphenols help fight free radicals, reducing oxidative stress and slowing aging.
• Heart Health: flavonoids in cocoa improve blood circulation and reduce blood pressure. Studies show that moderate chocolate consumption is linked to a lower risk of heart disease and stroke.
• Boosts Brain Function: cocoa contains theobromine and caffeine that enhance focus and cognitive function. It increases blood flow to the brain, potentially reducing the risk of neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s.
• Mood Enhancer: chocolate stimulates endorphins (feel-good hormones) and increases serotonin, which helps reduce stress and symptoms of depression. Dark chocolate contains tryptophan (an amino acid) and supports serotonin production that influences sleep, memory, reduced depression, and other neurological processes.
• Supports Gut Health: cocoa acts as a prebiotic, feeding good gut bacteria, which improves digestion and immune function.
• Improves Skin Health: the flavonoids in chocolate protect against UV damage, improving skin hydration and elasticity.
• Aids in Blood Sugar Control: dark chocolate (with high cocoa content and low sugar) can improve insulin sensitivity, reducing the risk of type 2 diabetes.

So we went to a popular family restaurant. We had to wait quite a while to be seated because of the crowds, but the boys were behaving, and I thought maybe this wasn’t so bad, and there won’t be any food to put away or dishes to do. We ordered our meals and started eating. Our three-year-old finished first and was standing up in the booth, looking over at the kind older couple eating in the booth behind us.

And then it happened. Our son was sick, to use a nicer word. All over everything. Our table, the booth, and the booth of the couple behind us. We were mortified. He had shown no signs of not feeling well, and in fact, ate just fine (which contributed to the problem). The staff brought us piles of napkins, but there was no fixing this. We packed everything up and headed home.

Earlier today, I saw a list of books that are “guaranteed to inspire thankfulness every day.” I looked at a few of them; they were alike in many ways. The authors encouraged readers to practice gratitude daily, look on the bright side of events, and focus on and think about the good parts of your day. They provided journaling exercises and specific phrases to repeat to help instill gratitude.

To me, the books all seemed to promote forced gratitude, kind of a “fake it till we make it” proposition. Some days, maybe we need that, but I think if we remembered, really remembered, where everything we have comes from, it might not be so hard to feel thankful. The Bible tells us that every good thing given and every perfect gift is from above (James 1:17).

Every good thing is from God. If we tried to make a list of literally everything good in our lives, it would take the rest of the day. Yes, we have bad days and sad things happen, but if you know God, you have a lifelong comforting friend, the ability to be heard by the Creator of the universe, and the hope of knowing you have no more fear of death.

Was I thankful that Thanksgiving we tried to go out for dinner? I’m not sure: I still cringe at the memory. But I know I could have and should have been. Thankfulness isn’t just for perfect meals or perfect days. We have so many blessings, and even just the basics – place to live, food, family and friends, clothes – all come from God. But as good as all our blessings are, the apostle Paul said he counted everything he had as garbage for the sake of Christ. All the things he could have valued, he threw away so that he could have Jesus. He knew the value of what God did for him, and everything else was nothing next to that.

If you know that for yourself, it does not matter what you eat for dinner. It won’t even matter if your kid gets sick all over everything and everyone. Knowing the worth of Jesus will overwhelm you with gratitude and make every day Thanksgiving Day.

God sent a letter to His people when they had just lost. Because of the Jews’ idolatry and sin, God allowed Nebuchadnezzar, the ruler of Babylon, to destroy Jerusalem and carry most of the people captive back to Babylon. God told them that they were going to remain in Babylon for seventy years, but if they pray to Him and seek Him, He will hear, and they will find Him. He told them He has a hope and a future for them, and He would bring them back to their land.

But while God’s people were stuck in a foreign land, God told them to pray for the peace and prosperity of the city where they were held captive, because if it prospers, you too will prosper (Jeremiah 29:7).

Perhaps a more familiar passage is 1 Timothy 2:1-2. There Paul wrote that petitions, prayers, intercessions and thanksgiving be made for all people – for kings and all those in authority so that we may live peaceful and quiet lives.

In both the Old and New Testament, we are told that our lives will be better if we pray for the leaders of our government. And in both cases, the government was the enemy. I know I often do not think about praying for our leaders, and it seems an even harder task when you do not like them, but according to the Bible, our peace and prosperity depend on it.

I want to give you a few prayers for leaders to help get you started. Those in government are people just like us, but they often have unique challenges and responsibilities:

• “God, please save them. Many of our leaders do not know you. I may never have the chance to speak to them, God, but You can. Convict them of their sin and bring them to You. Show them Your love so that they may lead out of love and godliness.”

• “God, give our leaders wisdom. I sometimes have a hard time deciding what to wear, but those in government make decisions on behalf of thousands and millions of people. God, the Bible says that wisdom comes from You. Please give them wisdom and the humility to seek the advice of wise people around them.”

• “I pray for their families, God. Many leaders are under so much stress, have very busy schedules, and are away from home for extended periods of time. Their families are of course going to be affected by this. Protect them from those who would physically harm them and keep their families intact and strong.”

• “God, I ask that You enable our leaders to do their jobs and to do them well. Please let them work for our protection and peace. You have said that the government is to punish those who do evil and praise those who do good, so I pray that our leaders pass, enforce, and uphold just laws and provide an environment that allows people to do good and flourish. When government rules well, we can live in peace and open godliness. God, You said that this is pleasing to You because You desire all people to be saved. When Christians can live openly godly lives, loving their neighbors as themselves, more people will be drawn to You.”

And that is what we all want. We want to see our family, our friends, our co-workers, our country turn to God and experience His blessing. Don’t give up if our politics and government look bleak. Ask God to bless and change our leaders and turn our discouragement into praise.

There are so many facets to this consideration that they certainly cannot be covered in a blog post, but yesterday I heard some things from Jeff Myers, the president of Summit Ministries, that I found helpful and wanted to share two of them with someone else who might be struggling to find a reason to vote.

Voting With Principles in Mind

The first is that there are principles, policies, and personalities. The founders of our country tried to form the nation based on principles we could all agree on, such as our rights do not come from the government but from God. From those principles, they made policies, and then the people elected the personalities to carry out those policies. But the personalities will always be in conflict, and what we have currently done is to put the personalities above the principles. We don’t like the person, so we won’t approve of anything they say or do. We have forgotten the principles that can unite us and are the unchanging basis of our laws and our very existence.

Good government, chosen on those principles, allows more people to be blessed and be a blessing. So the first takeaway is to vote on the basis of principles rather than the person.

Why Voting Matters Even When the Candidates Aren’t Perfect

The second idea is that the times will always be evil. The apostle Paul called his day evil (Ephesians 5:16), and they are certainly not good now. The evil doesn’t change. What changes is how we live in the time God placed us. With our vote, we aren’t to choose between the lesser of two evils but use our choice to lessen evil. Who will encourage standing up for the defenseless? Encourage policies that set people free, not seek to control? Insist on taking responsibility instead of taking away responsibility?

Mr. Myers related that in ancient Rome baby girls were not valued and would often be abandoned on the street to die. Christians would walk the streets, pick up these baby girls, and take them home to raise as their own because they believed all life was valuable. When the boy babies grew up, where were all the marriageable girls? They were in church. Many men converted to Christianity, some legitimately and some probably not, in order to marry the women. But either way, it enabled Christianity to spread throughout the Roman empire and through it, the gospel. Those Christians were not trying to change the world, but by their simple actions, they did.

Our single vote may not change the course of our nation overnight, but consistently taking a stand for good, for principles and not so much the people, allowing the government to make more room and space for good for more people, can and eventually will make a difference.

Now, just the thought of walking around for an hour with cold, wet feet makes me cringe. And grabbing a bag of apples from Aldi or Kroger is simpler than moving ladders around, attempting to climb a tree. But there are still good reasons to make the effort to go pick some apples yourself:

1. Kids still like it – and it’s outdoors.
2. It’s a good way to see where some of our food comes from.
3. Warm apple cider doughnuts.
4. The apples do taste better right off the tree.
5. You can get some great autumnal photos – might even get your teens to go along without too much complaining if they know they can post on Instagram!
6. If you are prepared, it can still be fun for you too!

So how do you prepare for apple picking so that you and your family have a good time and make great memories for years to come?

1. Dress Appropriately

It is outdoors, so dress for the weather – and check the weather forecast. Avoid that wet-feet feeling by wearing some sort of boots (or you can wait until later in the day). Shoes good for traipsing around in an uneven field are essential. Wear sunglasses or a hat since you will be looking up into trees. And layer. Maybe a flannel or corduroy shirt over a t-shirt that you can take off and tie around your waist if the sun makes an appearance. And think about this for your kids too. You most likely won’t want to carry around a bunch of coats the rest of the day if they started out overdressed.

2. Pick Your Apples (Ahead of Time)

Call ahead to see what apples are being picked and to check for any change in hours. Know what kind of apples you want to buy. Many orchards offer samples before you pick. Some apples, like Honeycrisp, Gala, or Fuji are great for eating and baking, and others, such as Granny Smiths, make delicious pies and applesauce. Picking a variety can give everyone a chance to try out something new and find out what your family’s preference actually is.

3. Bring Containers

Bring bags for picking and maybe bring some sort of cushioning and containers to place between layers to avoid damaging your hard work! Some orchards do not take credit cards, so if that is an issue, check ahead. Also, some orchards might provide baskets and cushioning for you, it never hurts to ask!

4. Teach The Little Ones

If you have kids or grandkids with you, before you start picking your apples help them understand how to pick apples so they do not damage the tree or other apples – the ripe ones will come off with a gentle tug or twist. Weekends are busier, so plan to share the orchard with others.

5. Eat Doughnuts (They’re Apple So They’re Healthy, Right?)

If your orchard has fresh apple cider doughnuts, I recommend trying those. I do not even like apple cider, but the doughnuts at my local orchard are some of the best baked goods I have ever tasted!

Teachers are ready to start a year with new students, new excitement, and new expectations. A new school year includes creating fun bulletin boards, shiny workbooks, and fresh supplies.

Many teachers have spent the summer thinking about the themes and methods that will entice the restless students that will grace their classrooms. Some teachers have taken summer workshops to spruce up their own skills and certification.

Parents on the other hand are most often voicing, “I can’t wait until school starts,” because they are ready to send the children back to gain their own breath of sanity.

Parenting of today is not the “Ozzie and Harriet,” “My Three Sons,” or “Little House on the Prairie.” Children of that era lived in neighborhoods and communities that provided safe environments where children could play outside and expend the energy that is now pent-up and internalized.

Parents of today are often working long hours, or several jobs to make ends meet. They are tired and stretched between home, family, and job responsibilities.

Children have the most mixed reaction to going back to school. I believe this is dependent on the child’s learning style and their social needs. Children who are hands on, kinesthetic, tactile learners tend to not want to return to very rigid, structured classrooms. While students who like to read, write, and “play school” are ready to return.

Students who have a high desire to be with people are ready to return to school to hang out with their friends. However, students who are shy or don’t fit into a typical social group are dreading returning to school.

How can we make this back to school a win-win for teachers, parents, and students? The most powerful thing we can do is to PRAY!

Prayer needs to be specific. Let’s look at specific prayer requests for each of those returning to school.

Teachers

• Clarity of mind in planning
• Peacefulness in times of stress
• Joyful appreciation of unusual circumstances
• Flexibility to catch the moments of unplanned learning opportunities
• Ability to juggle the responsibilities of home and school

Parents

• Persistence in helping children back into a school routine
• Patience when children are not cooperating to return to school
• Determination to support the education process in creating a love for learning
• Providing a loving atmosphere that supports each child beyond their school results
• Ability to develop a schedule that is workable for the family

Students

• Willingness to try new concepts
• Safety when playing with others
• Focused attention to really hear what is being taught
• Protection against bullies and others who may not hold their own beliefs
• Ability to complete homework as independently as possible for their age

We all once were children. You can add to the list based upon what you would have hoped people were praying for you. Not everyone reading this may be or have been a parent, but you can always pray for what you wish your parents or teachers would have provided during your childhood.

God has given us a wonderful opportunity to contribute to our communities by creating a Godly environment for teachers, parents, and students. If you know teachers, call their names out specifically. Possibly give them a quick call or drop a note to let them know you are praying for them. Think of families you would like to contact and tell them you are praying for them. This would be greatly appreciated. Also, ask them for specific prayer requests. When you have the opportunity to talk to any young person, ask them how they are doing in school and if they have any special prayer requests.

Don’t grow weary in well-doing (Galatians 6:9). Praying specifically is a much needed support to the teachers, parents, and students on the front lines of learning. There is a spiritual battle raging against our children and families. In public schools teachers are often caught in the middle unable to share Jesus as the answer. Our prayer coverage opens spiritual opportunities for God to move mightily on behalf of our future generation. We want the students, families, and teachers to know Jesus as their savior and friend that sticks to them closer than a brother. That knowledge of Jesus is PRICELESS and ETERNAL!

Statistically, that applies to about 90% of us, maybe even higher if we are talking only about women, because of the 10% of the world population that is left-handed, men are more likely to be left-handed than women. If you belong to a group that small, you are special, and that is why each August 13 is International Left-handers Day, a day to “celebrate the uniqueness and challenges of the left-handers community.”

Unless you are a part of this community, you most likely don’t give much thought to the challenges of being left-handed. I never did. I honestly don’t think I knew anyone who was left-handed for most of my life. But then I got some quick lessons when two of my sons turned out to be left-handers. I had never realized scissors were made for right-handers until my son was so frustrated because he was unable to cut anything, and then when school started, we found out together that spiral-bound notebooks just weren’t going to work.

Of course, these were not insurmountable obstacles. My sons are in their teens and twenties now and are doing just fine! And some notable lefties like Bill Gates, LeBron James, Keanu Reeves, Albert Einstein, Babe Ruth, Barack Obama, and Oprah Winfrey prove that being left-handed doesn’t need to be much of a hindrance at all. Most of those people would have grown up in a time when they probably had to just make do with what there was. Their moms weren’t ordering left-handed scissors or notebooks from Amazon for them to take to school.

But now we can. There are companies that make many kinds of products specifically for left-handers. If you’ve got one in your life – a friend, family member, or co-worker – take a minute to think about the specific challenges your left-hander might face. In the kitchen, a measuring cup they can read, a paring knife that cuts the right direction, or a can opener that isn’t trying to kill them. For the garage or workshop, there are measuring tapes, pruners, utility knives, and saws. And for the home or office, you can find left-handed keyboards and mice.

I bet you never really thought about such basic tools and utensils being “unhandy” for a left-hander, but if you know a lefty, let this year’s Left-handers Day remind you to be a little more understanding and maybe even find a way to help them out.

The father quietly told the other man that he would have to back up. The man argued that the father and his son could back up just as easily as he could. They began to argue about it, and finally, the father looked the other in the face and said, “If you do not back up, I’m afraid I am going to do something I’m going to regret.”

The man looked at the father and began backing his horse and buggy down the road. The father and his son remained still, giving the man the opportunity to get out of their way. The son, who had been raised in a Christian tradition that taught that the use of force, violence, and power was not right, was astonished. He turned to his father and asked, “Dad, what were you going to do that you were going to regret?”

His father answered, “I was going to back up.”

This is a humorous story about regret, but regret is usually not very funny. Sometimes, we’ll say, “I wish I had painted the walls blue” or “I really wanted chocolate ice cream,” but more often, regret kind of kicks you in the stomach and takes your breath away. The word regret comes from a word that means “to look back with distress; to grieve on remembering.” That more closely describes how we feel when we truly regret something.

A long time ago, I said something to my dad, and it wasn’t until many years later that I found out he didn’t understand and was hurt that whole time. Now, I would give anything to go back and clear things up, but – I think this is the hardest thing about regret – I can’t. Once we do or say whatever it is, there are no takebacks. It is forever out there, and there is often nothing we can do. Is there anything we can do to move past those feelings of regret?

Sometimes, I think we can. If it was a wrong we committed, a sin against someone, God offers complete forgiveness when we admit our wrong and confess to Him. The feeling of guilt will be replaced by forgiveness. Perhaps, we aren’t able to make amends to the person we’ve wronged, but God can give us peace about the things we cannot change.

But what if it wasn’t a sin that can necessarily be “fixed” by confessing? Maybe it was just a mistake or a misunderstanding – but it did forever change the way things went. I find it helps to remind ourselves that we are human and we sometimes do dumb things. I know my dad would forgive me if I could talk to him and wouldn’t want me to hurt this long. Another help is to know that God can turn bad into good. I know I try to be more careful with my words so that the same kind of misunderstanding doesn’t happen again, and I also know God comforts us so that we can comfort others (2 Corinthians 1:4). Helping another person through the pain of their regret will be beneficial for you both.
